Do you need wisdom teeth removal? Wisdom Teeth Removal is a common dental procedure for people in their late teens and early twenties. When wisdom teeth, or 3rd molars, do not erupt at all or only partially erupt, the patient has what is called “impacted” wisdom teeth. This condition often leads to pain or pressure on the adjacent teeth and a possible infection. Usually, the best treatment option is the extraction of the wisdom teeth.
Patients suffering wisdom teeth pain or patients of an age where wisdom teeth may soon cause a problem can be evaluated at our office using a panoramic x-ray. The x-ray will clearly show the whole tooth (teeth) and allow us to determine the best treatment option for you.
To help you figure out what is best for you (or your young adult), we have compiled a list of Frequently Asked Questions.
Many people can tell it is wisdom teeth pain just because they can feel the top of the tooth erupting. But if you have jaw pain, or what feels like a really bad earache, it may be wisdom teeth pain. Your wisdom teeth are located at the very back of your mouth. The pain can be caused by an infection, or because the tooth is pushing up or into your other teeth.
No. If the 3rd molar has fully erupted and is in a good position relative to the adjacent teeth, then it should be fine. The decision to remove an “impacted” wisdom tooth is made on a case-by-case basis. Many people with large jaws have no problem with their wisdom teeth at all.
Yes. Dr. Weiss has advanced training and experience in tooth extractions. And if you are currently our patient, we will already have your panoramic x-rays. If you are referred to our office, we will need to see your most recent panoramic X-rays, or we will need to take a new x-ray in our office.
Generally, the recovery time is only a few days. Taking the pain medication the dentist prescribes will help to manage any pain or discomfort. Following the aftercare instructions will also speed up your recovery time. Many of our patients schedule wisdom teeth removal during the summer or a school break, or late in the week, so they can recover on the weekend.
